Circular Logic

Public film review posted on Sat, 04 Oct 2008 by tobias

In the movie "Armageddon", there's a scene in which the President of the United States addresses the whole world to tell them about the space mission. In that speech, he says the following:
"And yet, for the first time in the history of the planet, a species has the technology to prevent its own extinction."
What kind of statement is that supposed to be? The President claims there was no species yet which has been able to prevent its extinction. That statement is clearly wrong, because every species existing on Earth prevented its own extinction yesterday. How can you know when "extinction" is to take place? If I take a deep breath, because I need Oxygen for living, I was in possession of the knowledge to prevent my own extinction. You can only know about a certain moment when a species failed to prevent its extinction, but every second a species is not being wiped out, it is successfully doing so.

True! movie quotes are more in air. I think author mixed "technology" with body brain ration.
