The Laptop with closed Lid on my Table. 

I got a new Laatp for the my new Job. My old . I ordnerd i on mysn.de and it’s one of the best devices ever hold in hand ever. I have this one now for a while and I’m almost happy with it. Even with some bad start problems.

I did choose this one cause it’s fitting exactly to my work. The Order took around 5 weeks because the screen wasn’t on stock.

A little bit about the Devices:

Hardware:

It’s a XIRIOS W701 mobile Workstation and runs with:

• Intel I7 2820QM (2.30 Ghz) 8MB L3 Cache
• 8GB of Ram SO-DIMM DDR3 RAM 1333MHz
• AMD Readon 6900M Graphicard with 2048 Mb GDDR 5 Ram.
• 2x USB 2.0,2x USB 3.0 , 1 x eSATA,
• DVI/HDMI,
• Non-Glare with LED 43,9cm (17.3″)
• 128 GB SSD,  M4-CT128M4SSD2
• An addition HDD slot.

One great think compare to a lot of other laptop is that the DVI and HDMI are not blocking each other. So i’m able to plug in two monitors.

Software:

Before i come to the Linux part, the Bios did some nasty stuff .

For the fist month i was annoyd everyday by a to load fan! The Graficcard Fan start to drill all day long, without any reason. No real use of the Gcard made it loader then everythink else in the room.

I updated the Bios then and it did become better, but just so much. The ACPI sensor was bugged then as well, it detected a temperature of 100 C and so both fan start to run on max. This happen just time to time, but was also very annoying as well.

I found (lucky) that the maintainer push short after a new Bios-update out! This fix everything!

Linux :

(My current desktop, Gentoo Gnome 2.30.2 and Linux kernel 3.2.1-gentoo)

The Linux driver support is quite good. The network driver was a little bit a problem in the beginning. I wasn’t able to use the jme driver stable before Linux 3.0.

To made the Wifi sys-kernel/linux-firmware are needed. Else the fn-keys can’t activaed the Wifi and the devices will not appear.

Intel  Advanced-N 6230 iwlwifi

One mayor problem is the Suspend to Ram – it works very unstable. With the 3.2 it has become quite workable, but after every suspend, the xserver is blackout. I have to plugin a other monitor or using Ctrl + alt + Backspace to reset it.
