OpenBankProjectHack/Make the Bank Berlin - Open Data Edition (evis)

This last Sunday will remain a memorable date in Germany. Besides our Hack/Make The Bank Open Data Edition, Germany won the World Cup in Brazil!

Somewhere in Kreuzberg, a group of people met for the fourth edition of our fintech hackathon. The theme of this edition: "Open Data meets Finance"

We started the day with some nice breakfast prepared by Simon and after a brief introduction of the APIs and the participants we went on hacking for the whole day.

4 hacks have been developed.

1) Bank Button
Simple online payment solution by directly paying the merchant.

2) Know Who You Deal With
Enriching Open Bank Data with company data using OpenCorporates API

3) OpenPEP
Open database of Politically Exposed People. The hack consists of an upload button to add PEPs on this platform.

Online platform to collect Zakat for the muslim community.

The day ended by watching the game and celebrating Germany's success.

Our next hack/make the bank adventure will be in London this fall. Stay tuned for more information.

Many thanks to Co.up for the space, Vegetarisch Berlin for the food and Mana Taheri for the visual facilitation and the Shuttelworth Foundation for sponsoring this event.

OpenBankProjectAmazing Dutch FinTech Hackathon! (evis)

“I see lots of hackathons and pitches, but you have built some fantastic things this weekend” Nektarios Liolios, Managing Director of Startupbootcamp FinTech said right before announcing the winner of this first Dutch FinTech Hackathon.

And boy was he right! It was a great hackathon. Overall, an impressive quality of apps. We had 60+ participants, 15 hacks and 3 wining teams. The Jury award went to Paygel, a simple and faster way to make online payment via mobile.

The other participating hacks ranged from financial advice to the elderly, fraud detection, CSR advice module, real-time risk analysis, an iBeacon shopping app, crowd funding platform, and cargo container insurance.

Below are the three winners:

Grand Jury Award: PayGel

Paygel, developed a service that provides easier, faster and safer ecommerce checkout. You can shop online simply using a laptop or tablet and pay using Paygel on your mobile device. This makes purchasing products on a Smart TV, for instance, extremely simple (Here is how it works

Jury special award: DonationBundle

DonationBundle let users decide how much they want to donate every month and to which causes. They also publish all the transactions on their website using the Open Bank Project API.

Audience Award: Fritz

Fritz developed an app that lets family members approve online purchases or payments on behalf of other members like parents approving expenses of their children.

The Other hacks are

  • Goal: An app that analyses your spending habits, to help you reach your goals in life.

  • PayDutch: Debt overview amongst friends.

  • AlamPay: A micro-financing service that provides online payment and POS transactions, focusing on developing countries.

  • Rankr: Realtime audit and risk analysis

  • Mij 'n zorg (WMO): an app that helps citizens generate a clear report on the care and/or funding they can request at the municipality's office for the 'wet maatschappelijke ondersteuning (WMO), based on their personal situation.

  • SIXHACK:APP.PROVE: allows a helpful relative or friend to monitor online transactions. Only valid transactions will be approved, fraudulous, erroneous and all others transactions will be declined.

  • Denary: allows anyone to receive money through multiple payment methods in a matter of seconds.

  • Regulatory Detective: Tinder for suspicious transactions by team TESOBE

We had a lot of fun animating this event. It was great to see DonationBundle (which uses the Open Bank Project API) receiving an unexpected jury award.  Also, very interesting to be host, facilitator, API provider and participating hackers all at the same time. Many thanks to our team for making this happen!

Big shout out to the Rabobank Innovation group who put their trust into our team since day one and were open and very pleasant to work with. We are very glad with the results and looking forward to the next edition! :-)

For those who can’t wait for a whole year, next Sunday, we are holding another fintech hackathon here in Berlin. This is time we will focus on fintech and open data. - feel free to join!
